The first in person meeting since March was held outside at Cactus Park in the City of Phoenix. There was a pretty good turnout! Members were asked to wear a mask and bring your own chairs as well as food and drinks. Voting took place for new applicants Phil & Sharon Murray and Jud Judkins who have been waiting patiently for this meeting having completed their requirements. Congrats to the new members! Toys could also be dropped off for the Children’s Rehabilitation Services Clinic Toy Drive.
Vintage Wings and Wheels Car Show, Mesa, AZ.
It seems to be coming an OTHG tradition that someone has to have their car pushed in to the show. This year it was Will Myer’s beautiful ’40 Coupe. It was having a starting problem so President Ron Boen and 3 ladies from the club assisted Will in pushing the coupe. Problem turned out to be a loose connection, easy fix! Picture seems to show that the Coupe has earned it’s wings!

Falcon Field held their 3rd. annual Wings and Wheels Car Show with about 200 collector cars and many vintage aircraft on display. The Aviation Museum is always interesting with various stages of restoration going on. There were food trucks available with a good selection from which to choose. We had 10 cars with 17 members attend.

Quite a few members headed to Payson, Az. to take in the Rim Country Classic Auto Club’s 27th. annual Beeline Cruise-in and Car show. This year with COVID restrictions the event was changed to the Payson Invasion with several cruises and a Poker Run planned. Lunch was provided by many restaurants in Payson but some members brought their own picnic lunches. Everyone ended up back at Main St. for a parade ending at Green Valley Park for Poker Hand awards, 50/50 winner and door prizes.

Today a few members cruised over to Elevate Coffee Company at 2530 W. Happy Valley Rd in Phoenix Az. to see Mike Rust’s drawings. He is a former member of the club and has drawn a lot of members cars over the years. He is a super cool artist and so creative, if you have the chance to see his work it’s well worth it !

Our May Putt to Bicuits Cafe was a great success. Lots of club members attended joined by friends and friends of friends. We sat outside on the patio and social distancing rules were followed, wait staff wore masks and the menus were disposable as were the condiments, etc. No more than 10 people in a group and the tables were spaced 6 feet apart. Food was great and the wait staff was friendly and efficient! Thanks go to Gene and Margaret Maione for putting this together.

OTHG Phoenix decided to have a Social Distancing putt. Parking at the restaurant in a circle and maintaining social distancing. Meals were ordered for take out. A pretty decent turnout considering the times we are in.

Our Hot rod community recently lost one
of our own, a genuine hot rodder, Eddie Aston.Eddie, born and raised in Southern California, was involved in Hot
Rodding as soon as he was able to drive, (and secretly before that). There are
so many great stories of Eddie, including him hot rodding his dad’s brand new
56 Ford pickup to driving cross country with Jack Stewart in a 1923 Dodge
roadster. Eddie and Joanne met in 1964, Eddie joined the LA Roadster club in
1965 and they married in 1966. Eddie’s family (his two children and wife of 53
years, Joanne), were always supportive and involved in Eddie’s hot rodding
pursuits. Joanne even had a few Hot Rods of her own as daily
drivers, like the Corvair with the chevy V8 in the front, ‘Old Hessie’ a
1956 Ford Truck and ‘Harriet the Charriot’ a 1951 Chevy Styleline coupe.
Eddie started his professional career at the LA times (don’t tell his boss but
Eddie even hot rodded his company car). In his professional life Eddie
pursued a variety of careers, owning a mobile home park in Bend, Oregon and as
a motor home company executive in Knoxville, Tennessee. Eddie and Joanne put
together and held a large annual hot rod event in Bend that drew many in the
hobby. Eddie at one time was the president of the LA Roadsters.
Eddie’s taste in Hot rods ran the gamut from mild to wild, he loved being
different. Eddie loved driving fast (hence the name Fast Eddie), being
busy, and always ready to go at the drop of the hat.
Eddie was and will be remembered as a great friend and consummate Hot Rodder
