What a great day it was for our Gang picnic!  Our task was to get everyone  together for new club photos and the lake was a great place to do it.  We all arrived at  Bartlett around 10:00 am, the weather could not have been better.  The lake was calm and beautiful to see.  Charlie and Danise Cover started taking  pictures of members and the cars they drove.  They did a great job of getting everyone’s picture taken and this is No Easy task, you know this is true if you were still around  for the group photo!  Haha.  The club provided hamburgers and hot dogs and all the fixins’ with members brings sides and desserts.   We had a fantastic turn out, I believe somewhere around 44/46 members but we had food to feed an army.  Thank you to our grilling team, Art Thomas, Andy Yex,  Larry Besore and Mike Arney, the burgers & dogs were perfect. We have some great cooks amongst us.  The salads were all good and the desserts yummy!!!  It was so nice to see everyone visiting,  the laughter was loud and contagious.   In a year with many up’s and downs this was a great moment for the Phoenix Over The Hill Gang. Cars, Food and good times with fellow Phoenix Over The Hill Gang members. Thank you to everyone for making this a wonderful car club outing! It was a team effort.  Special thanks to Carol Dalton who got the burgers & dogs, and all the rest of the board members for your help!!!!

Club Members Charity Opportunity

From Teresa Way

Photos by Danise Cover

Club members have the opportunity to purchase tickets on two items; a quilt and a table runner with hot pads/trivets.

The quilt, measures 73” x 97”, and the table runner measures 15” x 44” (the five hot pads/trivets each measure 8” square), they were made with the intent in raising funds for charity to benefit Hospice of the Valley Arizona. They provide top end of life care & focus on the whole person. Hospice Of the Valley Is Arizona’s Leading Provider of End-Of-Life Care.

The quilt, table runner and hot pads/trivets were designed and stitched by Teresa Way, using high end materials, and vintage collectable car t-shirts donated by members Larry Besore and Larry Way.

Tickets for each item are currently available from September 1 through December 1, at each club meeting; and on December 4 at the Holiday Party.  Purchase your tickets for chances to win these one-of-a-kind quality items!

Interesting Fact…a quilt has three layers, i.e., top, middle, and bottom. Different pieces of fabrics are stitched to give a complex pattern to the top layer of the Quilt. A sewing technique called “Quilting” is used to stitch all three layers together because of which they are called Quilts.

Larry and Mouse go Racing

Barona, Calif.

June 29, 2021

Write up and pictures by Larry Besore

So..

Larry and Mouse go racing… (Larry Besore and Ron Olmstead) Mouse driving his modified race car,  Larry providing encouragement and chauffer duties. We loaded up the Mouse Motor Special and headed for Barona California, just north of Lakeside/Santee area. The Indian reservation there sports a giant casino, and 5 miles north of that a nice drag strip and circle track. This race was the RPM national flathead drags. Focus on 4-bangers, flathead powered, and 1964 and older overhead motors. There were some very strong flatheads and a few overhead cars that were impressive. The Bangers ruled however!Stokers, overhead conversions, and modified flatty-bangers. Ron (Mouse) runs in the street legal flatty-banger class, a well-represented class.Mouse Motor Special ran good, winning the first 3 races. The semi race was a bit of a problem as the lights malfunctioned.  Starter had them stage and restage, Mouse was caught off guard when it went green quickly. Good race but he got beat. There a few exhibition runs by the original Drag-master car, and the world’s fastest 6 cyl dragster also. Both were very impressive. The races were 1/8 mile but still had some great times posted. It was hot, cars and drivers were overheating.

This race was full of honest Hot-Rods and Hot-Rodders, “run what ya brung” !

No posers or pretenders !

2020 SoCal Christmas Toy Drive

Each year in December SO-CAL Speed Shop in Phoenix collects toys for CRS. The CRS Clinic provides care for children with special healthcare needs. Every year CRS hosts an all-day Christmas event at their clinic. The event includes a visit from Santa, a Christmas gift for every child in attendance, refreshments, crafts, and games. The party provides a safe and free event for patients and their families. Every year our club collects toys and games and delivers them to SO-CAL Speed Shop to then be taken to CRS.

Another great Christmas Party thanks to Cindy Bryant and Linda Barnes! Each year these two ladies make the party better and better. This year out entertainment was provided by the Joshua Stone Band and our long term club supporter and friend Mike Combast. Great food, music and of course the ever popular Left/Right gift exchange.

2017 Christmas Party

Danise and I have found that using Apple Photo iShare that we can easily combine our photos and movies. Danise has been doing a great job capturing the local goings on in the Valley, that I dont often attend. She has been posting them to our Facebook Page and I look forward to her uploading them to the iCloud so that I can share them here as well.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year!

2016 OTHG-Phoenix Photoshoot

Phoenix South Mountain City Park

This is a slideshow of the members that made it to this years photoshoot. Good participation this year! Note: Michelle is standing next to my Tundra 4×4 pick up since the snow was around a foot deep  in front of our shop. I guess one of the days I will need to build a 4×4 COE truck with a Dodge Turbo Cummings engine so we can get out in the winter in a proper ride!

Hot Rods Meet Star Wars!

Last Saturday, the club met at Star Bucks on Central Ave for a cruise down Central to South Mountain City Park for our what is becoming annual Picnic and Photoshoot. The weather leading up to Saturday was not looking real great for either activities. El Niño had been visiting Arizona with a vengeance leading up to Friday. All week long the forecasters had been predicting a break in the weather for the week end, and for once they were spot on!  Saturday came with blue skies, puffy clouds and temperatures in the 70s.

We had a total of 29 club cars show up, Michelle & I decided to take my 4×4 Toyota Tundra since we had just received a foot of snow. ADOT was out early and had the roads clear and mostly dry so our trip to the valley was our usual under 3 hour excursion. Ken & Carol DuBois showed up in Ken’s truck since the battery in their ’37 Chevy was kaput. It took Michelle and I around an 1 hr 45 min to shoot the club cars and occupants. Larry Besore helped with keeping the line full so we didn’t have any gaps waiting for cars.

After lunch we had the down hill coasting drag race which Dave & Anne Bennett won in their 1937 Cadillac. To be noted the Caddy was by far and away the heaviest car in the race. I would bet that Dave replaced the wheel bearing with a set of super low friction ceramic bearings just to get an edge! 😉

Just about the time that the race awards were wrapping up a whole group of cosplay folks arrived at the picnic area next to ours. Of course they were all decked out in Star Wars costumes that were hand made and really looked great! The name of the group is the Shonare Vhekadla Clan Arizona of the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club.  Mike Rust invited them to pose with our cars and they gladly accepted. They are a really great group of people that know how to enjoy themselves!
